How We Built a Marketplace for Misfits

It Started with a Problem

The gift industry is massive. Billions of pounds every year spent on presents. And yet, finding something genuinely funny, genuinely different, genuinely memorable? Nearly impossible on the high street.

That's the gap we saw. Not just for buyers, but for the incredible independent creators making brilliant stuff with zero platform to sell it on. The big marketplaces either bury them in algorithms or slap them with content restrictions that make creativity impossible.

Building for Creative Freedom

From day one, our principle was simple: if it's legal, it's welcome. We're not going to tell a grown adult what they can or can't find funny. Our sellers create what they want, and our buyers decide what they love.

The Technical Challenge

Building a multi-seller marketplace isn't simple. Each shop needs its own identity, its own product management, its own analytics. But the buying experience needs to feel seamless. We spent months getting that balance right.

The best platforms get out of the way and let creators do what they do best.

What We Got Wrong

Plenty, honestly. Our first checkout flow was too complicated. Our search was rubbish. We underestimated how important mobile performance would be. But we fixed it all, and we keep fixing things every week.

  • Complete checkout rebuild reduced cart abandonment by 40%
  • New search with filters makes finding the perfect rude gift easy
  • Mobile-first redesign because 70% of our traffic is on phones

What's Next

We're just getting started. More sellers, more products, more ways to find exactly the right gift for that person who's impossible to buy for. Stay tuned — it's going to be fun.
